Thomas Miller Host Career Ready Internships
In July 2024, Thomas Miller had the pleasure of welcoming five students from the Career Ready programme for a four-week paid internship.
Thomas Miller partnered with Career Ready in December 2023, a UK national social mobility charity who work at the heart of employers and educators providing opportunities to disadvantaged young people. In the first year of the partnership, Thomas Miller employees have supported the students aged between 16-18 who meet specific Career Ready social mobility criteria through mentoring and skills masterclasses. The end of the academic year was rounded off by welcoming the students that the Company had mentored since January to the London headquarters for a four-week paid internship.
Our interns spent their time across a number of the different functions and businesses:
- Estreja within ITIC
- Andres within UK P&I Club
- Elizabeth within TT Club
- Esther within the Professional Indemnity Division
- Michael within the Group IT Function
The students were given the chance to learn new skills and experience, preparing them for the world of work, whilst understanding the wider structure of Thomas Miller, and the importance their business areas all play towards the success of the Group. In addition, they were able to spend time in different departments that were of interest to help build an idea of where they might like to start focusing their future careers, such as within Marketing, Finance and ESG.
The cohort also spent one morning at Lloyd's of London on a tour which explained the structure and history of the insurance market and how it operates, the roles of underwriters, brokers and the Corporation of Lloyds, with supporting facts and figures.
Last week, the internship was rounded off by a fantastic presentation session for the internship supervisors, mentors and other key stakeholders involved in the programme, whereby the students gave them an insight into the learnings of their placements, reflecting on the key skills and successes of their four-weeks, and how this will set them up for the future. A group presentation was also given, which provided the audience at Thomas Miller with some great ideas on how the Company can prepare themselves for the future to engage and retain the next generation of employees.
Thomas Miller looks forward to continuing supporting the students through the remainder of their Career Ready programme, and to start preparing for the new cohort of students for the second year of the partnership.
